Gillian Oakley

Gillian Oakley qualified as a nurse in 1995 and is a university lecturer at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) and an Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) in Palliative Care. She teaches postgraduate courses in palliative care, cancer care, acute oncology, non-medical prescribing, advanced clinical practice and end-of-life care. Gillian is also an advanced communication skills trainer for the connected programme.
Prior to joining UCLan in 2016, Gillian worked for 14 years as a Macmillan CNS before completing the ACP training in 2014. She is currently undertaking a Professional Doctorate in health sciences, on communication and consultation models utilised in practice.
Gillian is a clinical trustee of Pendleside Hospice in Lancashire and maintains a strong link to clinical practice. Her interest in breaking bad news is motivated by stories from patients who have given accounts of being given bad news poorly and the subsequent negative impact of this.
